Griffins Head to the Playoffs after the win on Saturday!

Updated on 09/05/2022

In what was easily their best game of the year, the Griffins soundly beat the Kennett Eagles to do their part to secure a Division 3 Playoff berth. The Griffins Senior game started with a short ceremony for the four Griffin Seniors: James Coburn, Captain Preston Kirby, Captain Evan Turner, and Cole Turner. Then it was time to get down to business, and the Griffins did just that. The boys came out hard from the first drop of the puck to the final horn, and they never let up. They beat the Eagles to the puck, they gained control of the play, they made good clean passes, and overall dominated the game.

Evan Turner opened the scoring late in the first period with a tip on a blast by Preston Kirby, with an additional assist from Elias Niemela.
The second period saw only one goal, from the Griffins' Quinn Mose with assists by Turner and Niemela. Both the first and second periods were owned by the Griffins, despite Kennett's attempt to come out strong. Any scoring attempts by the Eagles were stopped cold by goalie Cole Turner, and the outstanding defensive teamwork of Elias Niemela, Braden Crisp, James Coburn, and Leo Lacroix.
In the third the Griffins opened up the lead to 4-0 with nifty goals from Logan Favart (assists Turner and Kirby) and Turner (from Mose) for his second of the afternoon. Turner had two others that were likely in the net, but both times the referees saw things differently.
The Eagles managed to pot one late in the third on a breakaway shot over the shoulder of Cole Turner, but it was too little, too late. The Eagles pulled their goalie to try and win back some ground, but on his second attempt at the open net from the defensive zone, Mose picked up his second goal of the day.

With a dominating win in the books for the Griffins, the rest was up to Pembroke Academy/Campbell in their senior game against Laconia. The PAC came through for us with a 5-4 OT nailbiter of a win.
The Griffins play on Saturday 3/7 at 4PM in Laconia against the Belmont-Gilford Bulldogs. Pack up the car and come support the Griffins!!

Griffins Head into the Home Stretch with a win over Sanborn Epping

Updated on 09/05/2022

After a well-played but disappointing loss to Hollis-Brookline on Wednesday, the Griffins made it clear to the Indians that they came to play hockey Saturday night. Less than two minutes into the first period, Evan Turner collected a pass from Logan Favart, broke through the Indians defense, and scored the Griffins first goal. Fifty seconds later, in the same shift, Turner scored his second of four goals. On the next shift, just over a minute later, Quinn Mose struck a third time for the Griffins. Suddenly down 3-0 in less than three minutes, the Indians called a time-out to regroup. It helped, and the Indians were able to gain some control in their own end and the neutral zone. But with just under 6 minutes left in the first period, Preston Kirby found the back of the net with an assist from Turner. Perhaps feeling a little over-confident, the Griffins turned over the puck in the neutral zone, and the Indians capitalized with a 2 on 1 and beat goaltender Cole Turner for their first goal of the game. The Indians gathered some steam from the goal, but were not able to penetrate the Griffins defense again in the period, and in the last minute of the period, the line of Turner, Favart, and Aidan King went to work. Turner picked up a pass from King, drove around the zone and rifled a shot at the Indian's goaltender who left a big rebound for Favart, and he tucked it home. Turner immediately won the resulting face off at center ice, danced around the defense, and buried his third on the night.

Up 6-1 at the end of the first, the Griffins made some line up adjustments and came out solid in the second period. Each team picked up a single goal in the second; Quinn Mose worked his silky-mitt magic and put up his second unassisted goal of the night.

Turner picked up his fourth goal early in the third, and Kirby netted his second with an assist from Mose. The third period was more physical than the first, each team drawing two penalties, including a roughing call on the Indians when they laid a big hit on Freshman Tanyan Scott. The Indians managed one final goal late in the third bringing the final score to 9-3.

Great defensive play was contributed by all four of the Griffins blue liners; Elias Niemela who rushed the puck well; James Coburn, also penetrating deep into the Indians zone followed by fierce backchecking; Leo Lacroix and Owen Yeaw. Goaltender Cole Turner made 24 saves on 27 shots.

The Griffins travel to Laconia on Wednesday 2/19, and are home again Saturday 2/22 against John Stark-Hopkinton, in what is sure to be a very physical, very fast, exciting game.

Overtime Loss to Hollis-Brookline/Derryfield Warriors 4-3

Updated on 10/04/2024

To say the Griffins surprised the Warriors is an understatement. The Griffins came out strong from the drop of the puck to the final whistle in overtime; they kept their foot on the gas and made the Warriors work for every goal. Sophomore Quinn Mose opened the scoring at the halfway mark of the first period, with assists from linemates Mason Devost and Preston Kirby. But it was a short lead, as the Warriors struck back less than a minute later.
The Warriors jumped ahead early in the second period, but the Griffins defense and goalie Cole Turner played solid and kept them off the board for the remainder of the second. Mose tied it up with his second goal after scooping up a pass from Kirby and working his own brand of magic, weaving through the Warriors to the top of the slot and ripping a shot past the goalie.
It was a physical game, as the Warriors keyed on specific players - Kirby, who has a solid physical presence, and Evan Turner, the Griffins leading scorer. But despite the coverage, Turner was able to break free on a pass from Mose, and snipe the Griffins third goal midway through the third period. With just under 5 minutes remaining in the game the Warriors tied it up at 3. Both teams fought hard, but regulation ended in a tie, sending it into overtime.
The Griffins were able to get the puck in to the Warrior zone, but their defense held tough. With just three minutes remaining in overtime, the Warriors drew the Griffins to one side of the zone, and slid the puck to their man hanging alone at the top of the slot who drove home the final goal.
It was an outstanding team effort by the Griffins; the defense played a physical game, the offense backchecked and passed well, and Goalie Cole Turner turned away 38 of 42 shots.

Griffins Lose to Kearsarge-Plymouth 7-3

Updated on 10/04/2024

It was a disappointing loss to the Kearsarge Plymouth Cats in Andover NH last Wednesday. The first period was evenly matched as the Griffins held the Cats to a single goal in the first period. They tied the score at 1 when the K-P goaltender left the net to clear a puck, landing it directly on the stick of Evan Turner, who neatly sent it into the open net.
The second period remained close, as the Cats struck early in the second, but didn't pot their third until the last second of the period.
The Griffins suffered a handful of defensive breakdowns in the third period that allowed the Cats to capitalize on several 2v1 situations. The Cats scored two before the Griffins answered back in the form of an unassisted tally by Turner. Kearsarge picked up two more, but some hustle from Aidan King got the puck to Turner for his third goal on the night.
The Griffins face off against the Hollis Brookline/Derryfield Warriors on Wednesday 2/12 in Winchendon. It is sure to be an exciting game since the Warriors are the only team this year to shut out the Griffins, and they are not taking that lightly!

Griffins lose to Pembroke-Campbell 5-3

Updated on 10/04/2024

Any hope of generating a winning streak were put away on Saturday morning by the Pembroke-Campbell PAC, as they handed the Griffins a 5-3 loss. The Griffins kept the score close through most of the game. The PAC scored early in the first period, and then struck again with two more early in the second, but were answered by Logan Favart (from Mason Devost) and Evan Turner (from Favart) to close the lead to 1. The PAC netted one more in the second to go up 4-2. Evan Turner went unassisted in the third period for the Griffins third goal, but with 4 minutes left in the game, the PAC struck again.
Cole Turner handled 23 of 28 shots, including an easy penalty shot where the (PAC) player lost the puck in front of Turner.
It was Senior day in the penalty box, with 5 of the 6 penalties going to seniors Preston Kirby and James Coburn.

10-3 Win over Monadnock

Updated on 10/04/2024

The Griffins won big against the Monadnock-Fall Mtn Huskies for a second time this season, with a 10-3 stomping at Winchendon on Wednesday night. The first period was scoreless until the 14 minute mark when Evan Turner netted his first of four goals (and three assists).
The Griffins came alive in the second period scoring five goals - one each from Quinn Mose, Elias Niemela, Mason Devost, and two from Logan Favart (who also had 3 assists). The Huskies fought back with three of their own in the second, but the Griffins owned the third period, with four unanswered goals, three from Turner, and one from Preston Kirby. Goalie Cole Turner turned away 27 of 30 shots from the Huskies.
The Griffins take the ice in Winchendon again on Saturday 1/25 at 10 AM against Pembroke Academy-Campbell.

Griffins Win over Sanborn-Epping

Updated on 10/04/2024

Griffins with a 6-0 win over Sanborn-Epping. After a slow start in the first two periods, the Griffins came out firing on all cylinders in the third period, with Cole Turner notching his first shut out of the season.

Evan Turner (Hat trick and and an assist) started the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal. Quinn Mose potted one in the second unassisted as well. Despite playing solid hockey for the first two periods, the Griffins were not able to capitalize. Then came the third period. Logan Favart, who took a huge hit and was injured in the Wednesday night game against Stark, buried one with help from Braden Crisp. Then it was Turner with two more, first assisted by Aidan King and Favart; and then a tip on a shot from Elias Niemela. Mason Devost capped the scoring with assists from Turner and Niemela.

Penalties were high on both sides, and play was physical. A shout out to first year player John Oakes who, in the last minute of the game, took a huge hit from a Sanborn player, but jumped right back up and got back into the play.

6-2 Loss; Much Closer than the Score Indicates

Updated on 10/04/2024

On Wednesday 1/15 the Griffins lost 6-2 to the Hopkinton-Stark Hawks in a game that was much closer than the score shows. The Hawks scored twice in the first, but late in the period Griffins Captain Evan Turner sent a missle past the Hawks tendy to cut their lead in half.

With outstanding goaltending from Cole Turner, and strong defensive efforts from Elias Niemela, James Coburn, Braden Crisp, and Leo Lacroix, the Griffins held Stark to one goal in the second period.

Evan Turner struck again midway into the third period, to bring the lead down to one, but Stark answered less than a minute later with their fourth goal.

The Hawks were very physical, double-teaming Turner, and putting both James Coburn and Logan Favart out of the game. The Hawks were able to capitalize on the Griffins shortened bench and net their 5th and 6th goals.

Props go to the Griffins own solid physical play from Captain Preston Kirby and Quinn Mose.

Well Played, but a loss nonetheless, Berlin 4, Griffins 1

Updated on 10/04/2024

The Griffins played very well against a solid, well-disciplined Mountaineers team. Once again the Griffins held them scoreless through most of the first period, allowing only one goal with 3:04 left. A lucky bounce and a power play goal in the second put Berlin up 3-0. They added one more in the third before Preston Kirby rifled a shot past the tendy with 5 minutes left in the third period.

Cole Turner played outstanding, stopping 40 of 44 shots.

Griffins play again Wednesday at 7PM at New England College against John Stark-Hopkinton.

Tough Loss to Belmont Gilford Bulldogs

Cole Turner faced 36 shots. The Griffins are on the ice again Saturday 1/11 when they travel to Berlin.
