January 2 is a lucky day for the ConVal-Conant Griffins girls’ hockey team. A year to the day after they girls earned their first-ever win, they doubled their program win total Tuesday, beating Manchester Central 9-2 on seven goals by Conant’s Abby Drew.

The Little Green jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at 12:58 of the first period on a goal by Gabrielle Somers.

Abby Drew tied the contest at 8:58 of the first period then scored again at 4:40. Haylie Drew netted her first goal of the season shortly after to jump out to a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period.

The final two periods saw the Drew girls continue to dominate the score board with Abby scoring an incredible seven times and Haylie adding three assists. ConVal freshman Alessia Coburn scored her first career goal to cap the night.

The Griffins defense was solid all night, led by captain Emma Henderson’s effort. Conant freshman Abbi Friend turned away all but two shots and a late surge from the Little Green to secure the win.

ConVal-Conant’s first-ever win was also over Manchester Central, back on Jan. 2, 2017.

The Griffins are back in action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they take on the Crimson Tide of Concord at the Everett Arena.
